I gave everyone a Training Type, and spent a day fighting a mascot's halo

Hey, it's Gautam.

No team, no funding, no growth hacker. Just me, a laptop, and a stubborn idea that "build muscle and lose fat at the same time" deserves an app that actually explains itself. Here's everything that shipped this week. The wins and the stuff I broke.

The big one: your Training Type

Every RecompX user now gets a Training Type, and it evolves as you train. It's built from what you've actually trained, not from a personality quiz.

The Training Type reveal: The Contender, with the 12-week muscle map

Alongside it there's now a muscle map drawn from your logged sets. Train legs and your legs light up. Skip back day and the map tells on you. I first drew it by hand, it looked like a stand-in, so I scrapped that and rebuilt it on the app's real anatomy.

The Today card: Training Type, Silver rank and the muscle map filled in from real sets

Rank, and why it can go down

Points are the one currency in the app. This week they got a second half: rank. It's scored over a rolling 12 weeks, so if you stop showing up your rank drops. That's on purpose. I'd rather it be honest than flattering.

Each rank also has its own icon now.

Take the quiz on the web, skip it in the app

If you took the quiz at recompx.app/start, the app used to make you do it all again. Now you get a one-time code and the app picks up where the web left off. Small thing, but every repeated question is a reason to quit.

What broke (yes, I'm telling you)

  • The Done button on the height picker did nothing for anyone using metric. If that was you: sorry. Fixed.
  • Recco, our mascot, had a white ghost next to his hand. Then a pale rim around his body. Then a halo. I spent most of a day on it before realising the renderer was the problem, not the art. I also built a little "motion lab" screen just to watch animations properly, because I clearly needed one.

What's next

Getting the next build through App Store review, and making the first week of training feel like a win instead of homework.

If you've read this far, you're early. Hit reply and tell me one thing that annoys you about fitness apps. I read every reply.
